The Brief
The existing external staircase had deteriorated significantly due to age, exposure to the elements and lack of maintenance.
The structure showed clear signs of wear, including failing coatings, corrosion to steelwork, worn anti-slip treads and general degradation, creating both a visual issue and a potential safety concern for users.
The client required a cost-effective refurbishment solution to restore the staircase, improve safety underfoot and extend the lifespan of the structure without the need for full replacement.
Our Solution
T&D Design and Build delivered a full refurbishment and redecoration package:
- Carried out a detailed site inspection to assess the condition of the staircase and identify key areas requiring repair.
- Prepared all steelwork through mechanical cleaning and removal of loose coatings, corrosion and contaminants.
- Treated affected areas to prevent further corrosion and ensure a suitable surface for recoating.
- Applied a full protective coating system to all steel elements, improving durability and weather resistance.
- Refurbished stair treads and landings, including reinstating high-visibility anti-slip nosings to enhance safety.
- Ensured all works were completed with minimal disruption to the operational use of the building.
Result
The refurbishment has transformed the staircase both visually and functionally.
The new coating system provides long-term protection against the elements, while the upgraded anti-slip finishes significantly improve user safety.
The client now benefits from a clean, compliant and durable access solution, extending the service life of the existing structure and avoiding the cost of full replacement.
