Ryde, Isle of Wight - Cast Iron Railing Restoration
Ryde, Isle of Wight

Project Overview
Restoring historic ironwork is a delicate balance of craftsmanship and preservation. For this project in Ryde, Isle of Wight, we were tasked with restoring damaged cast iron railing pickets while maintaining their original character and structural integrity.
The Restoration Process
1. Site Survey & Assessment
Our team conducted a detailed survey, documenting the condition of the existing railings through photography and precise measurements. This step was crucial in ensuring that the restored elements would match the original design seamlessly.
2. Fabrication of Bespoke Cast Iron Pickets
To retain the authenticity of the railing, we fabricated custom cast iron pickets, designed to replicate the originals. This ensured that the restoration remained true to the architectural heritage of the site.
3. Removal of Damaged Sections & Surface Preparation
The damaged pickets were carefully removed, with any excess material ground flush to the coping stone using an SDS drill. This meticulous approach provided a clean, stable foundation for the new components.
4. Coping Stone Installation & Structural Reinforcement
A new coping stone was installed, securely embedded using lime mortar to reinforce the structure while maintaining breathability—an essential factor in heritage restoration.
5. Finishing & Protection
The remaining cast iron railing pickets were prepped, rubbed down, and coated with Dulux Hammerite paint, ensuring a durable, corrosion-resistant finish. This final touch not only enhances longevity but also restores the aesthetic appeal of the railing.
The Result
The project successfully restored the railing to its original appearance while enhancing its durability. By combining traditional restoration techniques with high-quality materials, we ensured a long-lasting solution that preserves the character of this historic site.
